On paper, the media procesors are very powerful, even much more than any C-Cube's chips. The problem lies in the extreme difficulty of programming the media processors efficiently.

They are designed to do any thing and move 128 bit or more data in one cycle. But, when it comes to do any specific work, such as MPEG-2 decoding, it cannot compete against a 3-year old CUBE chip.

For instance, the MPACT chip from Chromatic was out over 18 months now. Nobody can demonstrate a good MPEG-2 decoding yet with it. Same applies to Trimedia.

When you look at the computing consumption of MPEG-2 decoding with the Trimedia chip, it is over 60%. You almost can do the same thing with a K6-233 or a Pemtium II in software.
