3Com's CoreBuilder 7000 HD Switch wins "Editors Choice" from Network Computing
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 10, 1997-- 3Com Corp today announced that its CoreBuilder 7000 HD switch, previously named CELLplex 7000 HD switch, received top honors in Network Computing magazine's high-end switch test. Appearing in the April 1 issue, the test review article describes 3Coms switch as "the easiest to use and the most expandable" with "top-notch" throughput capacity.
The CoreBuilder 7000 HD switch is a modular, chassis-based switch built around a 5.0 Gbps switching engine and a custom-built, 3Com patented ASIC (application specific integrated circuit) called the ZipChip. The 5.0 Gbps switch supports up to 64 Fast Ethernet ports, 144 Ethernet ports, 32 OC-3c (155 Mbps) ATM ports or 8 OC-12 (622 Mbps) ATM ports. The switch's unique design ensures full fault tolerance, advanced traffic management and control enabled by TranscendWare software, and scalability of bandwidth and network size. From the vendor that was first to ship ATM Forum-compliant LAN Emulation (LANE) two years ago, the switch offers a full suite of LANE services. The CoreBuilder 7000 HD switch provides the networking performance required by data center applications - ideal for large scale enterprise networks.
"We are proud that the CoreBuilder 7000 HD switch has been acknowledged by Network Computing as an industry leading core switch that provides customers with the most cost-effective data center solution in the marketplace," said Nachman Shelef, vice president and general manager in 3Com Systems. "Enterprise networks obtain meaningful benefits from the CoreBuilder 7000 HD switch because of its scalability, fault tolerance, management capabilities and flexibility. For example, our switch supports up to 64 switched Fast Ethernet ports, enabling customers to use the switch as a high-density, non-blocking Fast Ethernet switch with a migration path to an ATM backbone."
In its review article, "Scale Ahead of Net Traffic With ATM Edge Switches" (by Joel Conover), Network Computing verified the flexibility of 3Com's switch by awarding it "top honors for its high degree of expandability and its advanced ATM features." The review emphasized that "with its advanced features, such as Available Bit Rate (ABR) support and the capacity for up to 32 ATM ports, you can't go wrong with this switch."
3Com's comprehensive switching solutions include the CoreBuilder 7000 HD switch in the data center as the core of the high-performance networks. A featured component of 3Com's Gigabit Ethernet solution unveiled this week, the switch provides the flexibility and performance across the "bandwidth hierarchy" of switched 10 Mbps through 1 Gigabit speeds. Furthermore, 3Com provides the connectivity for low cost edge devices to connect directly to the CoreBuilder 7000 HD switch as the fault tolerant, reliable network backbone.
The price for 3Com's CoreBuilder 7000 HD switch is $23,900.
