DIPY:
Anyway, the choice of mushroom was dictated by the fact that I was looking for something that can grow in garbage! <g>
You probably mean mold / mole that grows in garbage.

My friend,
Mushrooms need clean sanitary compost to grow. They don't grow in garbage. Mushroom species are often very particular about their substrates. The substrate is fermented, pasteurized, or sterilized in order to prevent or reduce competition from fungi other than the chosen species. The growing medium is then inoculated with spawn.
Although commonly grown on sterile straw from wheat or
rice, they can be produced from a wide variety of high-cellulose materials. Some of these materials
do not require sterilization, only pasteurization. Another advantage of growing oyster mushrooms is that a high percentage of the substrate is converted to fruiting bodies, increasing potential profitability.
Truffles are related to the mushroom but are bulbous and unimpressive looking. They are used in small quantities to flavor a variety of dishes. They grow on the roots of trees and are valued as a delicacy.

For 10 years, you were in India and but never mugged or beaten to a pulp. That speaks of a good-natured people in general. Count your lucky stars. Were you ever mugged in this country?
