Ike,

Tax considerations do not apply to retirement accounts. But that is beside the point. The main problem with your recommendation is the implication that over the short term, an individual investor can better judge the risk-reward ratio of selling vs. holding than the aggregate market. Which, judging by the posts in this thread (which is quite an extensive experiment) is not the case. Otherwise, traders wouldn't have felt that their heads were in a vice in both bull and bear markets.

I am not a trader. I was not rejoicing or changing my lifestyle when the S&P returned 50% YOY, and I won't when it drops.

Finally, do you sell your house when you feel that the real estate market is topping?
