The latest issue of PC Magazine (paper version dated 11/2/99) has on page 106 has a sidebar where the magazine tested several Microsoft Office applications using Citrix technology. They noted a noticeable lag using 56 Kbs modems, which was reduced but didn't vanish with faster connection speeds. Faster computers were also better. A conclusion was that the level of performance is less than that seen when the apps were on the PC. They thought the CTXS solution might be best for employees that use these applications occasionally rather than as their daily job. [IMHO, Office might not be the best kind of application to use for a CTXS test. Applications requiring large amounts of information but less manipulation of that data might be best.]
In any case, the ability to get rid of a good bit of your IT department, and to use low cost sturdy reliable PC's might make the lags seem less annoying.
The latest earnings are very encouraging, but the rate of increase is not enough to make it likely that CTXS has leaped the chasm into mainstream pragmatic markets.Another of my favorites,SEBL, is showing nearly twice the earnings acceleration and probably is across the chasm now.
The larger article called "Send out for Software" is interesting reading.
