I didn't see the CNBC clip, but it sounds similar to the "Fleecing of America" segment on last nights NBC nightly news. It said basically what you have stated, that land has been bought for next to nothing from the government for the purpose of gold mining, and $600 million (billion?) dollars in gold have since been extracted.

I believe California was the only state mentioned, but don't hold me to it.
