GLOBAL BROADBAND SATELLITE INVESTMENT TO TOTAL $28.8 BILLION BY 2004, ACCORDING TO PIONEER CONSULTING

pioneerconsulting.com

CAMBRIDGE, MA - October 7, 1999 - Total investment for broadband satellite networks will reach $28.8 billion by 2004, according to recent analysis performed by Pioneer Consulting. This level of investment reflects a predicted increase in confidence in the satellite industry among investors and a continued demand for global connectivity. The introduction of new Ka-band technology should be a catalyst for potential investors and customers in the broadband satellite sector. Applications such as direct access, multicasting and caching will also serve to fuel demand in the market for broadband satellite services.

If all proposed broadband satellite systems were to be built, upwards of $80 billion in investment would be needed. However, total demand for satellite investment has overwhelmed the supply of available and predicted capital. "While some proposed satellite networks will definitely not be deployed, there remain a number of viable competitors in the broadband satellite sector who will fare well in the market," said Christopher Baugh, Satellite Networks Analyst at Pioneer Consulting. Cost, technological complexity, regulatory issues and total network design are all major factors to consider when predicting likelihood of deployment in this sector. "In addition, the satellite industry has a lot to prove to the financial community before the required investment can be committed," says Baugh.

Pioneer's latest report entitled "Next Generation Broadband Satellite Networks" analyzes the market for broadband satellite services and profiles the competitive landscape for commercial satellite technology in the telecommunications industry. Detailed demand models and forecasts for the growth of broadband satellite subscribers, service revenue and equipment revenue are presented for each geographic region.
