Joe and Thread,

The September issue of the Northwest Airlines in-flight magazine had a story on Memory Stick. It is actually just an interview with Mark Viken, Senior Vice President of Marketing for Sony Electronics.

The piece is called "Making Memories" and it is very one sided. Viken claims Memory Stick is better because it has 10 pins versus 50 pins for CompactFlash. The product is, therefore, less prone to mechanical failure.

He also talks about Memory Stick being in a variety of electronics products that will make up a "personal network" within one's home. He states that Memory Stick is an "enabler" that will allow you to chose it as the single solution for removable memory that you can sneaker net around your home from digital camera to PC to TV to printer...

He states that they are also targeting the cell phone market.

He believes that several flash storage solutions will co-exist. He feels it is superior to CF or SmartMedia.
He did not bother to mention MMC or SD.

He mentioned "Magic Gate" which is Sony's copyright protection technology.

He states that there are others who have licensed Memory Stick (Casio, Fujitsu, Olympus, Sanyo, Sharp and Aiwa), but no product releases are out currently.

It is a very one-sided article. One wonders if Sony actually paid Northwest for the space. The article begins inside the back cover of the magazine in the section called Last Word in Tech

Maybe SanDisk can get a similar spot in the future to help add some balance.
