Israel Tower Semiconductor To Renew $1B Plant Plan - CEO

JERUSALEM -- Israel's Tower Semiconductor Ltd. wants to renew a proposal to build a $1 billion plant after it finds a strategic partner for the project, chief executive Yoav Nissan-Cohen said Thursday.

"The plan depends on having a strategic partner, but we are conducting talks with foreign companies," Nissan-Cohen told Dow Jones Newswires, without naming the companies.

Tower Semiconducter came up with plans for an additional plant several years ago, but dropped the idea due to declines on the semiconductor market in 1997, Nissan-Cohen said.

"Now there is a new window of opportunity since the market has seen an upturn," he said. "There are more potential partners for joint ventures of this kind."

In addition, the recent earthquake in Taiwan has encouraged the industry to diversify the location of production facilities, he said.

Tower reported Wednesday third quarter losses at 37 cents per share, compared with 38 cents a year before.

"Our expectation is that we will return to profits in 2000," Nissan-Cohen said.
