Sun Microsystems plans `smart schools' in India

NEW DELHI, Oct. 20

`SMART schools' that would give children access to the latest computing technologies are soon to become a reality in India. Sun Microsystems, the leading provider of open network computing solutions, has agreed to provide the infrastructure support.

In partnership with the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Sun will set up three such schools. It will also provide the school network infrastructure and work with content providers, as recommended by the Ministry.

Sun also announced a proposal to make an investment of $500,000 in the form of equipment for India's academic institutions under its academic equipment grant programme. It would also donate Java technology-based software development tools and free access to the source codes for the Solaris operating environment, the SPARC processor architecture, Java and Jini technologies......
