I think everyone here is misunderstanding that last line "Because it has happened to me." I don't think he was saying it happened to him today, just at some time in the past and that is how he can claim to know what is happening. He might have even been talking about last year.

This is correct. In a previous column he detailed when it happened to him and how he was forced to cover instead of waiting it out primarily because of shorted (index?) calls. It was at least a year in the past and I seem to remember it was even longer ago.

In an even earlier article he told another story about how in his early days he was shorting the hell out of a stock that just refused to go down. After a few days of the stock moving against him he called his trader wife (who he was dating at the time) asking what she'd heard about the stock. She called him back after talking to a few others and told him something that made his "blood run cold": the people she talked to said that a small-time hedge fund manager was shorting the stock and that they were going to either crack him or make him cover. He says he blew out the short as quick as possible with a big loss.
