How would a person profit from this knowing this trick? That is, how would we know if the price is just "passing by" the low 19's on its way to the 18's?

Let me guess? The spread prior to the fall was consistently in the range of 3/8 to 1/2. Then, all of a sudden the spread widened to 7/8, while the ask remained constant at 20 1/8 -- bid fell to 19 1/4. Is this a good guess?
