TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The nation's computer industry is recovering from the island's devastating earthquake last month, but delivery delays continue to plague the island's big personal-computer and semiconductor makers struggling to fill booming Christmas orders.

"The worst of the problems are over, but we are looking at very large increases in demand and we can't immediately make up for the production that was lost right after the earthquake," says Henry Wang, a spokesman for Acer Inc. Acer, a major supplier to International Business Machines Corp. of the U.S., now predicts it will miss by 10% its pre-earthquake shipment target of 600,000 notebook computers in the fourth quarter. Still, that's 80% above notebook-computer deliveries in the year-earlier quarter, Mr. Wang says.
