Dear Thomas: Some more Iridium experiences to share:

I sent a note to a friend of mine who has been on since the beginning. Here's our e-mail dialog:

how's your Iridium experince going? How do you like it?
Does it work (well)? Be curious to know... Geoff

it's really quite the disaster.

i know a guy who took one with him into the desert (180 degrees of horizon)
in the american southwest. no coverage.

i know a guy who took one with him to mount everest (220 degrees of
horizon). worked great until it did a handoff and then it dropped him. let's
be clear here, there aren't even many oxygen molecules between the phone and
the satellites and it still couldn't manage it.

what is the lesson: the iridium spin is that the service works, if only we
could find people to pay for it. my experience is that the technology sucks
and the fact that people aren't paying for it shows that people aren't as
dumb as many think...

My experience is very similar to ones you stated... I was all set to buy one, until i played with a friends who was visiting me here in Prague. From my roof TOP balcony it went from WEAK SIGNAL (zero coverage) to four/five bars of coverage. I just don't understand....

Did you read about Philiipe Kahn's experience -- during a PC WEEK/WORLD/Whatever interview eariler this summer? He was on his boat in the MIDDLE of the Pacific ocean -- 180 degrees of horizion -- and it dropped the call in the middle of the interview (handoff failure -- reconnected fine, but he had to restart the call). I mean if it doesn't work in the middle of the wide blue sea...

So far i know 5 people who have had the phones and cancled the service!

Do you still have yours, what about your own personal experiences? Any different/better?

Geoff
