Waste Management Audit Uncovers
More Problems; More Charges Seen

Waste Management Inc. is expected to disclose as early as Friday that a massive audit of its hundreds of dumps and trash-collection operations has uncovered yet another round of accounting problems, requiring a third-quarter charge of as much as $1 billion, a person familiar with the matter said.

The big adjustment would follow $3.54 billion in pretax charges taken in February 1998 to correct years of questionable accounting, followed by what was supposed to have been exhaustive due diligence leading up to the $19 billion July 1998 merger between Waste Management and USA Waste Services Inc.
