re: Salix and Sonus, unfortunately, i've only seen their names in passing. in the packet-based telephony space, i'm a bit more familiar with Convergent Networks (but not much). i only say this because i own a telecom player and one of its subsidiaries, called Ulticom (formerly DGM&S Telecom), currently licenses Convergent their SS7 software.
about a month ago, Wirbel (again!) wrote a very nice piece on soft-switches in which he discussed various new packet-circuit protocols (e.g., CPML, XML/Services). while it doesn't cite Salix or Sonus -- but a very intriguing Canadian start-up, Abatis Systems -- you maybe interested:

i saw that point under the "ASIC killers" header and i think it's a very good question for bulldozer. i'm hoping he pipes up over here sometime as i pointed him to my first post (Wirbel's SONET piece) and the ensuing discussion i hoped we'd begin. it's a valid point, IMO, especially as these comm chippies diversify their product mix; companies that were previously viewed as complementary are now viewed as competitive. for example, Vitesse has traditionally concentrated at the PMD/PHY layer, and by moving into higher layer functionality (particularly in LAN or data storage), they could begin to encounter PMC-Sierra, TranSwitch ... or Broadcom (guffaw!).
shame on me as an AMCC shareholder, but i'm not that familiar with NT. do they fab a la LU Microelectronics?
