"SEATTLE, Oct 22 (Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc. AMZN.O said
on Friday it has filed suit against competitor
Barnesandnoble.com Inc. BNBN.O alleging that the online book
and music retailer copied Amazon.com's patented 1-Click
technology for online shopping.
No one from Barnesandnoble.com was immediately available
for comment.
The suit, which Amazon.com said was filed late Thursday in
U.S. District Court in Seattle, alleges patent infringement and
seeks an immediate and permanent court-ordered halt to
Barnesandnoble.com's use of the shopping feature. The suit asks
for an unspecified amount of damages, online retailer
Amazon.com said in a statement.
The 1-Click feature, which has been available since
September 1997, securely stores billing and shipping
information so returning customers only need to click their
mouse once to buy a selected item, rather than repeatedly
entering the same information for each purchase, Amazon.com
said.
Last month, Amazon.com said it would introduce new features
on its Internet shopping site that expand the range of
merchandise available. In its new zShops initiative, anyone
would be able to sell merchandise, excluding guns and animals.
