I'm a buyer of unix workstations, which I take it is Sun's
primary product. It seems to me that this is a highly competitive market, because every time I make a purchase I
look over Compaq,IBM,Sun,HP and SGI. Compaq makes the fastest machines and SGI has the best graphics. But I never
see a huge difference in price performance among them. Sun
is often the slowest machine and often the lowest priced one. I can see where this makes Sun a fair investment but
I don't see how it can be a great one, relative to other
tech stocks. Particularly LINUX is a threat to Sun, I think,
because one doesn't have to be locked into Solaris if everybody goes for this free Unix. So then the choice of the
machine will depend only on hardware features, not on what
"we're used to." I'm neither long nor short Sun; I am interested to hear a strong argument for Sun's uniqueness.
I certainly don't see any.
