I have no idea but it seems they (Intel) are fragmented and have no margin for error...how quickly that happened when the Athlon appeared.
Before, Intel could delay and get away with it...this time they had to really break out the PR.
This is further evidence for the old axiom, "Megahertz sells"-TM McMannis, in that if you don't have the megahertz lead all you have is excuses and a couple synthetic benchmarks, in this horse race.
Most all the gamers I talk to aren't fooled by optimized benchmarks like "winstone 99". Even with Intels gasping attempt to surpass the 700MHZ Athlon with a "short supply" 733MHZ coppermine, they understand which on the is more powerful chip...and just laugh.
