Intel to launch Coppermine processor, Carmel chipset next week
Oct 22, 1999 --- Intel will launch its latest Pentium III, code named "Coppermine," and Pentium III Xeon processors, on Monday. The chipmaker also will roll out its i840 chipset, dubbed "Carmel," next week. PC OEMS, such as Dell, Compaq and IBM among others, are expected to simultaneously launch a number of workstations as well as entry and midrange servers using the Coppermine processor. These systems will feature a variety of chipsets including those from Reliance Computer Corp. and VIA Technologies as well as Intel's "Carmel," which is targeted at workstations and servers using Rambus DRAM (RDRAM) memory technology. According to published reports, several vendors will roll out systems using Reliance Computer Corp.'s "server sets," chipsets for servers. A Reliance Computer Corp. spokesperson declined to name any of its customers, however, the spokesperson did say the server set maker has won a lot of business. |
