the FACT that the minority is ALWAYS going to have an uncomfortable feeling about the sway of the majority. Doesn't matter how many laws are passed.

The problem is what constitutes a majority in this country... it is not simply numbers. I have noticed in my area a decidedly negative slant in the papers regarding the Kansas City evolution in schools issue. Something like "Bush supports creationism in schools - scientists SHOCKED" ... stuff like that. I sense the local majority is agnostic, perhaps even atheist... the Christians are factionalized, etc. None of this would matter of course if majority opinion ruled in sheer numbers... my area would have to put up with the Jesusification of schools, whether the local majority wanted it or not.. But, we have more money than the Bible belt, therefore liberal, godless California matters much more than the sheer numbers dictate on almost every social issue.

I have oftened wondered why the religious right doesn't back campaign finance reform more strongly... their biggest enemy is money really... I don't think the corporate elite sides with the far right on much.
