The Money Flow indicator and Bid/Ask volume.

The Money Flow indicator in the SingleQuote window is calculated by identifying up and down share volume. That is, if a trade is at or above the most resent best ask then it counted as up volume (money flow is positive). If a trade is at or below the most resent best bid then it counted as down volume (money flow is negative). If a trade is between the spread it is not count as up or down and is just left out.

Does this comparison of trade price to the bid and ask seem the best (only) way to find up and down volume when having only the data received by a computer? What about if the trade price is higher or lower than the previous one then the volume is up or down respectively?
