When I was growing up there certainly always was an in group and an out group, and the out group never took up arms against the in group. No one could even imagine it. Why have times changed? Because we changed the family support structure when we propelled tens of millions of formerly at home mothers into the workforce. Now we have a majority of latchkey keys with two parents who are too busy and tired to provide much guidance and support. With this weakened support system, anger at the "missing" parents is projected out at in group members who also are "rejecting" the latchkey nerds. Without peer or family support, the nerds take up arms against the jocks, or panic and indiscriminately shoot up a bunch of people.

Of course, this is very un-P.C. But what else has been the biggest change in the middle class family structure since the fifties, where there were practically no such incidents?
