Ali and Watsonyouth, re: Motorola repipelining the PowerPC,

It was apparent to me that the current PowerPC pipeline is rather short. Specifically, in the MPF slides, the MPC 7400 (current G4) has a four-stage pipeline, while the new G4 will have a seven-stage pipeline. I guess in this case, a repipelining will definitely help improve the clock speeds.

On the other hand, Naras Iyengar, the Motorola guy presenting the foils, repeatedly stressed that frequency alone is not sufficient for performance. Therefore the next G4 core will also be able to execute more instructions per clock, as well as feature a memory/cache subsystem improvement.
