SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER

Mercata Inc., an e-commerce company backed by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, has raised $35 million in venture capital to accelerate into new product categories and educate consumers about the company's group buying concept.

Investors in Mercata's second round of venture capital include Highland Capital Partners, Global Retail Partners, Europ@web, Amerindo and Watershed Capital.

Bellevue-based Vulcan Ventures, Allen's venture capital arm, also participated in the deal. Van Horn would not disclose the total amount of financing in the company, but he noted that this round is larger than the previous investment made by Vulcan Ventures.
