Re: it appears you can use the 840 chip set for single processor systems...

Win 98 runs on MP systems, it just doesn't make any use of the second processor (taking it to its extreme, MS DOS runs on quad processor systems - and I've had to do so to run some diagnostic and configuration programs).

Those benchmarks are very interesting. They don't make clear the use of dual memory channels (which they were almost certainly doing - not unfair to do so, just unfair not to mention the fact). There is also no mention of whether or not the 840 is being run single or dual processor - my guess is its single processor, dual memory channel.

Benchmarks where they could use compiler tweaks, like SPEC and CPUmark, they do well in. Benchmarks where real applications are run, like SYSmark and Winstone, performance is so-so - especially considering this is a dual processor, dual memory channel board intended for the $3,500 to $5,000 market.

By the way, what's up with the SYSmark NT scores? They seem too poor to be true, given the configuration. Did Intel and AMD use different versions?
