Elmer, Athlon TOTALLY DESTROYS Coppermine and Carmel...

You posted some SPEC scores where some compiler tweaks were used for Coppermine that weren't used for Athlon. Now take a look at what happens when they run the same code:

Bapco SYSmark for NT:

AMD 650 - 584
AMD 700 - 607
INTC 667 - 310
INTC 733 - 330

intc scores from www.intel.com
amd scores from www.amd.com

Bapco is real world applications benchmark - it actually runs a mixture of Microsoft Office apps, Corel, and a few others. This is how the processors perform on real applications instead of arbitrary benchmarks with one CPU using compiler tweaks and the other not using compiler tweaks. This is what happens when both run the same code.

To tell you the truth, I'm a little surprised by this huge difference, but it's hard to argue with the two manufacturer sites. Maybe you can check them out and identify some configuration differences - I didn't see any significant ones, other than Intel was using a workstation class motherboard with two rambus channels while AMD was using plain old PC100.
