Stamps.com just plunked down half a billion in stock for iShip.com, a privately held company. Nothing unusual, you say?

Go to iShip.com's website. All they do is redisplay shipping rate information directly from ups/fedex/airborne's websites. And their "tracking center" simply redirects you to UPS/fedex/airborne's website.

And their "print your own shipping label" just redirects you to UPS's website where you can download ups software to print a label!

And that, folks, is it! iShip doesn't do a damned other thing! It's nothing more than a dozen or so links to UPS and Fedex's websites. It could be recreated in a weekend by some web designers and perl hacks. but why would you? People dont save any time by going to iship. It takes just as long to type "ups.com" as it does to type "iship.com"

I'll wager 100 bucks that this is another deal like the famous amazon/kliener projects. I'll bet stamps.com has friends who were investors in iship.com.. (iship is a private company)

Once again, when the mania ends and people wonder where their money went, the execs of these sort of deals better keep their passports and overseas accounts up to date.
