Continued YAHOO musings from the ASRS:

I try to report the facts as I hear them. Dr. Durrie was one of the six participants in the debate over Intacs vs. LASIK vs. PRK. He was listed in the program for the ISRS (International Society of Refractive Surgery) meeting which precedes the AAO here in Orlando. I think it is quite impressive that 52% of the audience of hundreds of surgeons (76% of them LASIK surgeons) would have voted his presentation on Intacs as the most convincing!
Someone in error has attributed a comment to me that eye doctors were "displeased with a $50,000 payment" for starting Intacs. I have never heard such a comment while I attended the ISRS, but you should note that it cost me $45,000 to begin my Intacs practice, which is entirely financed at approximately $1000/mo.
I do not consider this to be an unbearable entry to beginning a refractive surgery practice, and is a lot more appealing than financing a laser center. My downside with Intacs is negligible, and my upside is unlimited. I am tremendously excited by this technology, and my staff is really excited also.
One final thing before I sign off--my wife and I walked through the AAO convention hall at noon today, and passed by the Intacs booth. There was a crowd around it like flies to honey! I couldn't even say hello to my sales rep, he was so busy!
