October 25, 1999 (BEIJING) -- China's major consumer electronics producer, Konka Group, said it would invest RMB200 million (US$23.8 million) to build a mobile phone production line.
The company also said it expects a market share of 20 percent in five years.
Chen Weirong, general manager of Konka, said his company now holds about 20 percent of the color TV market in China.
China's mobile phone market has developed rapidly in recent years. The number of mobile phone subscribers grew at an annual rate of 93 percent in 1997 and 78 percent in 1998. So far this year, the number of mobile phone users has increased by 11 million.
Official estimates put the increase at an annual rate of 12 million mobile phone users in the coming years to total 150 million by 2005.
Presently the Chinese market is occupied by Motorola Inc., Nokia, Ericsson and other foreign brands.
