AT&T Wireless says growth curtailed by
technical problems

NEW YORK—AT&T Wireless Services Inc. said it added 269,000
subscribers in the third quarter, reflecting the company's battle with capacity
problems and handset shortages.

President and Chief Executive Officer Dan Hesse said AT&T Wireless
significantly scaled back advertising in some markets to correct capacity
constraints, but added that the company couldn't have added a larger
number of subscribers because of the lack of handsets caused by
components shortages. Hesse said he is confident the company will have a
strong fourth quarter in net additions.

Wireless revenue grew 44 percent, said the company, as it reduced off-net
roaming costs by 20 percent from third-quarter 1998.
