The optics business is extremely important to Nortel, this year and next. It has been, if you do the math, basically carrying the top line this year and the bulk of the earnings,' said Rob MacLellan, analyst at CT Securities in Toronto.

About 6 weeks ago, the analysts were saying Nortel had to rely on wireless because they didn't have any other growth area.

Now they are saying Nortel has to rely on fiber optics. They ignore the fact that Nortel has the broadest product portfolio of any telecom equipment company.

What you've got is basically very, very strong optical sales offset by, at best, a lackluster performance from what
used to be Bay.'

They still want to slam Bay. They ignore Bay's contribution to the new products such as Versalar which is part of the Packet OPTera suite of product. Bay's contribution cannot be measured solely by sales of LAN switches and routers.

When will they stop referring to this company as the "Canadian Telecommunications Equipment Company" and start referring to the telecom equipment leader?
