There's something else at work here. (disclaimer - wild guess; author on dangerous drugs) This provided an excuse to prune a Charter Member (remember free SI?) who isn't generating page views on many "real" threads. Y'know, the ones with a ticker in the name.
This could simply be a retroactive membership invoice. The Dryers would'a never done such a thing ... but we're not in Kansas anymore.
