John--I am skeptical that the Kiwis can retain the cup.
The problem is that the challenges are growing increasingly fierce. There tends to be two or three challengers that in retrospect would win the cup in the last couple of America's Cup's. It takes an extremely rich and motivated country to field the several syndicates to vie for the right to defend, that seems necessary to me for a defender to have a real chance of holding the cup.
Dennis Conner likes to hold back a bit with his boats. He does this to disguise the speed of his boat and to keep his opponents from rising to his level. They realize too late that how fast his boat is. He used these tactics to defeat New Zealand for the right to challenge a couple of Cups ago (went on to defeat the Aussies easily to return the cup). I don't know if that is what he is doing right now or if he really doesn't have a boat with the horsepower needed.
All the Best
