You could make an SDRAM system that is fast as hell too. Just build in two memory channels, and require paired memory, just like on the i840.

There are extra expenses associated with adding in the second channel, and that is why people aren't doing it much. For one thing, you end up taking more room for memory on the motherboard.

By the way, there was a fascinating quote on Rambus power consumption issues impacting on performance issues. I am going to post it over on the Rambus thread, as soon as I have caught up with my reading there.
