The VHP activists would converge in the state capital after the Pope's departure from the country to hold a two-day dharna on November 11 and 12 before the state secretariat demanding legislation against conversions.

Yikes. I guess I will have to find an alternate route to the airport then. I have no objections to the state capital being shifted to Cochin, if it means that the dharnas will go with it.

Back on topic, I think the VHP is barking up the wrong tree. Missionary activity in India, aimed at conversions, is being carried out more by certain Protestant groups than by the Catholic church. The VHP's real problem with the Catholics seems to be that they are carrying out a lot of social service programs such as schools and hospitals, and this may induce people to convert to Catholicism. During the election chat on rediff, V.H. Dalmia of the VHP asked how would Christians feel if Hindu charitable organizations used social work to convert Christians to Hinduism. I think the VHP should actually try that before asking the question.

Another gem from V.H. Dalmia:

"All persons should be free to practice the religion of their birth".
