jim -
CPQ's problem IMO was a signicant absence of any kind of vision and a preoccupation with fooling its shareholders

LOL!! You are referring to the strengths of the previous management team!! I date the decline of CPQ to the arrival of Earl Mason in mid '96, and along with it the manipulation of expectations both on the street and inside the company. Likewise the lack of vision - the only "vision" I ever heard was "We will be a $50B company", something that will turn out to be almost incidental to DELL.

I think the difference between my "prediction" and those of others on this thread was that I backed mine with some view on the strategies and market forces that would make that happen. But there have been many on this thread who did a better job of predicting both near term and long term business trends for DELL... Not too many who figured out what would happen with the stock price this year though.

CPQ's strategy would have been "really neat" if executed in 1997. The world is changing quickly and they will need a whole new plan going forward. DELL too, but I see DELL settling in to a focus on core business, a continuing simplification of the message to customers and employees, and the usual relentless emphasis on field and production execution. I am confused about a couple of points in their strategy but not about their ability to do what they need to do.
