Actually, if you study the documents, the language does not support the actions that were taken in the years following. Even Archbishop Lefebvre signed on to 14 of the 16 documents!

I guess the real damage was done later by people who invoked "the Spirit of the Council". The weak Pope Paul VI was unwilling or unable to do anything about it. The secular world can learn a lesson from this fiasco. There was deliberately vague language used that lent itself to multiple interpretations, and there were "time bombs" planted. Whether by design or not, they certainly went off later. Come to think of it, maybe the secular world did learn something...
