WINNIPEG, Oct. 26 /CNW/ - Rogers Cantel Inc. today introduced two new wireless data services in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The first, Cantel(R) AT&T(TM) Interactive Messaging service, is an all-in-one messaging service that provides users with the ability to send and respond to messages worldwide via Internet e-mail. The second, Cantel AT&T AirPOS(TM), is a wireless point of sale service that enables on the spot sales transactions. ``We are committed to putting the power of wireless communications into the hands of our customers in Winnipeg,' said Darryl Levy, Vice President and General Manager, MidWest, Rogers Cantel Inc. ``It is estimated that eighty per cent of e-mail messages sent by businesses require a response and with Cantel AT&T Interactive Messaging, our customers can send and respond to messages anytime, anywhere.' With near real-time text messaging, the RIM Inter(at)ctive Pager 950 becomes the ultimate communication tool. Messages of up to 16,000 characters (approx. five pages of text) are delivered over the Cantel AT&T Mobitex network in approximately 10 seconds with secure, packet-switched transmission. The service will notify users when the message has been delivered, and when the recipient has read the message. This truly ``mobile office' solution is ideal for business teams that need to stay in touch including mobile professionals, sales forces, couriers, and field service technicians. Rogers Cantel also announced today the availability of Cantel AT&T AirPOS service in Winnipeg. This service provides wireless authorization of debit and credit card transactions at the point of sale. Cantel AT&T AirPOS delivers fast, reliable and convenient transmission of customer transactions at retail outlets, taxi cabs, restaurants, food delivery services and more. ``With point of sale terminals, retailers are no longer tethered to the wall,' said Mr. Levy. ``AirPOS can carry out transactions anywhere, anytime -in-store, at home or on the road. Our customers like the convenience of debit cards. There were more than 50,000,000 debit card transactions in Manitoba last year, and we're pleased to offer our customers in Winnipeg the option of using their debit or credit cards anywhere they do business.' Cantel AT&T Interactive Messaging runs on the RIM Inter(at)ctive Pager 950 - a compact and highly functional device with a full QWERTY keyboard, and powered by an Intel 386(TM) processor. The device also features a unique thumb wheel that functions similarly to a PC mouse and allows users to navigate through messages and menus with simple roll and click motions. It is the smallest, most powerful communications tool in the industry. Currently Royal Bank and Scotiabank are supporting AirPOS using the IVI Checkmate Elite 780 terminal. Royal is also offering its retail customers a Schlumberger Magic 9000 terminal. Both terminals feature full functionality, including a printer, and are smart card capable. These handheld devices provide a convenient way for merchants and agents to quickly and conveniently serve their customers. ``Rogers Cantel has a history of providing wireless communications solutions that began with our launch of wireless services in Manitoba in 1988. We are pleased to be the first wireless company in Manitoba to offer both Interactive Messaging and AirPOS, once again leading the way in the development of new leading edge wireless products and services.' Cantel AT&T Interactive Messaging will be available in Winnipeg at select Cantel AT&T locations. The Cantel AT&T Mobitex wireless network was built by Ericsson Canada.
