Akamai Leverages AboveNet's Internet Connectivity for Fast, Reliable Content Delivery
  Business Wire - September 22, 1999 08:13
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 22,1999--AboveNet Communications Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Metromedia Fiber Network, Inc. (Nasdaq: MFNX) and the architect of a global one-hop network that brings together high-bandwidth content sites, ISPs, and Application Service Providers in centralized co-location facilities, today announced that Akamai Technologies, which operates a global Internet content delivery service that speeds up Web performance, has joined AboveNet's Internet Service Exchange (ISX) facilities in San Jose, Calif. and Vienna, Va., and AboveNet U.K.'s ISX facility in London, England. Akamai will co-locate its FreeFlow(SM) servers in these facilities. AboveNet will provide Akamai with the fast, reliable high-bandwidth Internet connectivity and the proximity to end users Akamai requires for improving the speed and performance of popular, high bandwidth Web sites.
By co-locating its FreeFlow servers at AboveNet's ISXs, Akamai is able to leverage AboveNet's superior "one-hop" network infrastructure and AboveNet's 273 private and public peering relationships with ISPs and Internet backbone providers to get content to end users quickly and reliably. In addition, AboveNet's 18.2 Gbps of bandwidth capacity will enable FreeFlow servers to handle surges in traffic on any of Akamai's customers' Web sites.
"Akamai is in the business of improving the Internet-experience of Web sites users," said Jonathan Seelig, Vice President of Strategy and Corporate Development at Akamai. "For this reason, we very carefully review the performance, reliability and scalability of the networks we use for our servers. We are very impressed with AboveNet's high standards of excellence and network performance."
"Akamai is changing the way content is delivered on the Web, and many of the busiest sites are adopting FreeFlow for optimal performance," said Van Jepson, Vice President of Marketing at AboveNet. "The presence of Akamai's leading-edge servers in our facilities is a further demonstration of the growing recognition of AboveNet's global ISX model for high-bandwidth business-critical Internet applications."
Conceived by top scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Laboratory for Computer Science, Akamai's flagship offering, FreeFlow, improves the effectiveness of highly trafficked, content-rich Web sites. FreeFlow uses an innovative technology to move Web site content faster and closer to end-users. With FreeFlow, Web pages are downloaded more quickly and delays from Web congestion are avoided. Akamai's customers include some of the top Web sites on the Internet. With Akamai's FreeFlow service, these Web-intensive businesses can deliver more engaging sites that can result in more page views, more advertising revenue, and more transactions. |
