Methanex Corporation - In the News NP says Methanex in new fight over additive ban Methanex Corporation MX Shares issued 173,136,748 Oct 25 close $4.08 Tue 26 Oct 99 In the News The National Post reports in its Tuesday, Oct. 26, edition that Methanex is pulling out all the stops in a bid to force California to back down from banning a controversial gasoline additive that is the backbone of the struggling manufacturer. The National Post's Peter Morton writes that after launching an unprecedented lawsuit for nearly $1-billion (U.S.) against the United States government, Methanex has filed the first complaint from a company with the NAFTA environmental commission. It claims California has failed to enforce its own environmental laws by allowing gasoline to leak from many of the state's 15,675 underground storage tanks. The additive, methyl tertiary butyl ether or MTBE, is made from methanol. It is suspected of causing cancer and other health problems if it gets into drinking water. Methanex disputes this.
