I too am skeptical of the Kiwi's choice not to hold a defender's series. I can certainly understand their reasons. Tis a small country, and this is such an extremely expensive undertaking. Nevertheless, the Kiwis are top notch, and anyone who underestimates them is a fool. Some have argued that the three US teams in '95 spent so much time beating the hell out of each other, that they were exhausted by the time they got to the finals. I don't buy this -- Black Magic was clearly the superior boat and crew in '95. Yet I can't help but feel that going into the 2000 finals cold (in terms of real, pre-match experience) leaves them at a disadvantage versus the challengers. We'll see.

Sure, Dennis always sandbags. He'll be around in the later rounds, but I really doubt he'll make the LVC finals. Then again, it's obviously risky to count him out so soon :)

Regards, John
