Amazing to read about the conquests of Genghis Khan, and think of the sheer size of his empire. Undoubtedly the greatest military career in history. Amusing, too, to read European accounts of "the barbarian hordes". In reality the Mongols that invaded Europe in the 13th century were wildly outnumbered by every army they fought; they also destroyed every army they fought. Strange to think how different European history might have been if Ogotai's mistress hadn't decided to poison him, leading Batu and Subotai to rush back to participate in the division of the spoils.
