AmEx unveils 'Blue' smart card
American Express Co., New York, unveiled its new U.S. smart card program today, launching the "Blue" revolving credit card aimed in large part at consumers who conduct business online. The card will carry a low-interest credit application on a traditional magnetic stripe, which cardholders will be able to use anywhere American Express cards are accepted. But the new cards will also pack a smart card chip storing a digital certificate. Internet shoppers can use this added security when they shop online, using an electronic wallet American Express is launching for the new card program in November. Cardholders who ask for a reader for their personal computers before January 31st will receive it free. Card Technology has learned that American Express expects to issue more than one million of the new cards, which will be based on the Multos smart card operating system. The company intends to add applications to the chip, a company spokesperson confirmed, but declined to comment further. (see top stories) (9/8)
