Dr. Berger will be responsible for overseeing and reviewing DIG technical initiatives, conducting technical forums, managing DIG technical resources, interfacing with other standards bodies and fostering interoperability. "The DIG has been busy creating a number of related technologies and standards in the last year. Marc Berger has the qualifications to ensure our growing portfolio of technology advancements work together to deliver on the promise of digital imaging," said Lisa Walker, president of the DIG. As a driving force behind the growth of digital imaging industries, the goal of the DIG is to develop and promote digital-imaging standards. DIG member companies collaborate in small, focused initiative groups to explore new directions in digital imaging and transform these ideas into industry-wide solutions. Through these initiative groups, the DIG is currently developing standards for the JPEG 2000 file format, image metadata, Internet-imaging protocol and Flashpix. "I am pleased to be taking an active role in the DIG to further its mission to provide better and unique imaging solutions based on open standards, a vision which MGI Software also shares," said Dr. Berger. "Through its Live Picture purchase, MGI Software is assuming many of the initiatives Live Picture has begun as founding member and technology contributor to the DIG." Dr. Berger was formerly chief scientist for OliVR Corporation, Ltd. (acquired by Live Picture in 1997), an Israeli software firm that developed Internet-image clients and servers. At Live Picture and OliVR, Berger's work involved end-to-end imaging systems for high-resolution virtual reality images and conventional images, including content creation, image editing, image distribution in client/server environment and interactive navigational image viewing. While at Live Picture, Dr. Berger was also technical committee contracting chairman for the DIG, and was involved with Flashpix extensions, the Flashpix test suite, interoperability among Flashpix applications, the IIP specification and the IIP reference-server implementation. As chief scientist for MGI Software, Dr. Berger is responsible for intellectual property, strategic government research and development projects, algorithm development, technology evaluation, and liaison with industry consortia and standards bodies. Dr. Berger holds a PhD in mathematics from Carnegie Mellon University, and is a registered United States patent agent. About the DIG Launched in October, 1997, the DIG is an open-industry consortium created to expand the use of digital images across consumer, business and professional imaging markets and applications. Membership gives companies the opportunity to help define the evolving technical platforms in digital imaging and to create solutions built on those foundations. Membership also gives participating companies the opportunity to collaborate in future marketing and promotional activities. Further information about the DIG is available at www.digitalimaging.org.
