TRW Establishes Rambus RIMM Module Validation Lab to Provide High-Speed, Third-Party Verification
REDONDO BEACH, Calif., Oct 27, 1999 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- TRW (NYSE: TRW), a global leader in high-speed microelectronics, today announced that it has established a Rambus-approved independent validation laboratory to verify performance of Rambus(R) RIMM(TM) and Continuity RIMM memory modules.
RIMM and Continuity RIMM are general-purpose, high-performance Rambus memory expansion modules intended for use in the next generation of personal computers and workstations. TRW provides memory module manufacturers with an independent source to verify that modules meet Rambus' specifications.
"TRW validation will help assure that Rambus module manufacturers deliver the highest quality, interoperable modules to customers," said John Kirchner, director of Technical Operations at TRW's Space & Electronics Group, based in Southern California. "We're a world leader in calibration and metrology, with traceability to the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
"We've developed software that automates data acquisition, reduction and analysis for validation of Rambus memory modules. The software works in conjunction with the Gigatest Labs GTL4040 probe station in our lab. The result is a process that dramatically improves repeatability of measurements -- while also cutting cycle time."
"We are pleased to welcome TRW as a Rambus Validation Service provider," said Laura Fleming, director, Alliances and Infrastructure, Computer and Memory Group, Rambus Inc. "The expertise of TRW's Metrology Lab is well-suited to making the precise RIMM module validation measurements."
Kirchner added that TRW has long been a world leader in the development and test of ultrahigh-speed digital and RF circuits and modules. These include high-speed digital signal processing chips and subsystems, gallium arsenide integrated circuits operating at frequencies to 100 GHz, and high-performance indium phosphide circuits only now beginning to reach the market.
Production of these technologies has made TRW's Space & Electronics Group a global pacesetter in many areas of high-speed microelectronics manufacturing, including testing of microwave monolithic integrated circuits (MMICs), radiation-hardened spacecraft computers (e.g., TRW RH32 processor) and fully integrated, MMIC transceiver modules operating at millimeter-wave frequencies.
"The agreement with Rambus offers an ideal opportunity for TRW to provide its experience in module manufacturing and test to memory manufacturers supplying RIMM and Continuity RIMM modules," Kirchner said.
