Compaq Tru64 UNIX-based AlphaServer Systems to Assist in Supporting AOL Membership Growth
Compaq Equipment Selected by AOL to Complement Existing Compaq NonStop(TM) Himalaya Systems
HOUSTON, Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ - news) announced that America Online (NYSE: AOL - news), the world's leading interactive services company, has agreed to purchase Compaq AlphaServer systems running on the Compaq Tru64 UNIX® operating system to support various core AOL functions. The new AlphaServer systems will be used in addition to existing Compaq NonStop(TM) Himalaya and Tru64 UNIX-based AlphaServer systems currently installed at AOL.
Terry Laber, vice president of Systems Operation at America Online, said, ''Our key priority at AOL is to ensure that our members continue to have the best possible online experience, and as we continue to rapidly build our network, we're pleased to build on our relationship with Compaq. Compaq, with its breadth of solutions, is able to help us deliver a network that is both scalable and reliable.''
AOL uses Compaq NonStop(TM) Himalaya and Alpha Servers systems along with the Compaq NonStop(TM) SQL/MP database to support several of its business functions. Today at AOL, the Compaq NonStop(TM) Himalaya system is tightly integrated with servers from Compaq and other vendors.
Bill Heil, vice president and general manager, Business Critical Servers Division at Compaq, said, ''Internet-based computing is driving a dramatic change in global commerce, and AOL is one of a handful of companies leading the way. To succeed, AOL had to build an extremely reliable, scalable Internet-based infrastructure. To compete in the Internet-based economy you must deliver on your 24 x 7 promises, and we do. Compaq has worked closely with AOL for years and understands these needs.''
A Compaq customer for more than five years, AOL now boasts more than 18 million members and has reported over 1,200,000 simultaneous users during its ''prime time.'' Compaq AlphaServer systems set industry standards for high performance, high availability, and high reliability. Based on the Compaq Alpha chip, the industry's fastest microprocessor, AlphaServer systems deliver users high-speed processing for fast navigation. The Compaq Tru64 UNIX operating system provides the highest degree of performance, scalability, and availability.
Compaq NonStop(TM) Himalaya systems, widely regarded as the world leader in business-critical availability and massive scalability (many user systems exceed hundreds of processors), are increasingly attractive as powerful engines in large-scale Internet-based infrastructures. Their unique ability to deliver both availability and scalability is proving to be particularly valuable among large ISPs, government infrastructure providers, and global enterprises that are building large Internet-based business environments. Compaq's working relationship with AOL reflects its commitment to be the industry leader in helping companies exploit the advantages of Internet-based enterprise computing. As part of the Compaq NonStop(TM) eBusiness strategy, the company provides a broad array of platforms, solutions, and services. All are designed to provide the customer with the 24 x 7 availability, scalability, and data integrity that Internet-based computing requires.
This agreement is in addition to AOL's strategic relationships with other technology providers.
