Hockeyfan, I did ask the same question to a knowledgeable, mutual friend, and was told it didn't work that way. Those card readers have to be able to read the reference template in the smart card, and it's not clear that any old smart card reader can do that.

P.S. By the way, I've met you in person, and it's not the phone line.
