One of the problems one has when looking at the strategic bombing of Germany is the fact that production Did go up. Question is, did it retard the production growth?? Also, I suspect that the drain on Germany by having to defend against the bombing raids should also be considered. Approximately 20,000 88mm guns were employed against the US/UK bombing offensive. One can only imagine if those had been deployed along the French coasts and the eastern front. Japan was totally disrupted and their industries destroyed by strategic bombing before the use of A-bombs. Factories not destroyed usually stood idle due to the workers having run off to the hills from the terror of the firestorms. The nukes simply provided an excuse to force a surrender on the diehards.
