GLENAYRE AWARDED CONTRACTS TOTALING OVER $17.5 MILLION TO UPGRADE LDM TAIWAN'S PUBLIC PAGING NETWORK ENHANCED NETWORK WILL PROVIDE Innovative Paging Services To Over One Million Subscribers

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Oct 27, 1999 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Glenayre Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq: GEMS) announced today that it has received two separate contracts for $16.5 million and $1.0 million to upgrade the nationwide paging network of the Long Distance and Mobile (LDM) Business Group of ChungHwa Telecom, Taiwan's national telecommunication company. The project, which will allow LDM to offer subscribers new enhanced paging services, is scheduled for completion in July 2000.

Under the contract, the existing paging control terminals and RF control systems will be replaced with Glenayre's advanced GL-3000 Wireless Messaging Switches and GL-C2000 series RF controllers. The new GL-3000 paging control terminals will have a total capacity to serve 1 million subscribers. The subscribers in the existing systems will be migrated to the new GL-3000 paging control terminals. In this way the advanced features provided by the GL3000 can be provided to the subscribers in the existing systems.

With the updated infrastructure, LDM will be able to offer customers a new suite of value added services, such as Virtual Paging. With Virtual Paging, one of the applications that LDM will be developing using the new infrastructure, a GSM subscriber can receive pages over GSM short messaging service (SMS) enabled phones. GSM subscribers can choose to receive the page through a pager, a mobile phone or have the message delivered to both devices. This new functionality also allows a subscriber to receive paging calls locally and internationally on a GSM phone.

Eric Doggett, president and chief executive officer of Glenayre, stated, "We are pleased that LDM chose Glenayre to help introduce innovative and exciting new features for Taiwan's mobile population. The LDM contract signifies our continued evolution of the Glenayre product line with the development of new applications and Solutions for an @ctive World."
